Pool Chemistry Basics: What Actually Matters
The handful of numbers that determine whether your pool is safe and clear.
Chlorine is your primary sanitizer
Chlorine kills bacteria and algae — levels too low let contaminants grow, while levels too high can irritate skin and eyes and bleach swimwear.
pH affects everything else
pH that's too high or too low reduces how effectively your chlorine works and can cause skin/eye irritation or damage pool surfaces and equipment over time.
Alkalinity is the buffer that stabilizes pH
Total alkalinity keeps pH from swinging wildly — if alkalinity is off, pH becomes very difficult to stabilize until alkalinity is corrected first.
Test before you treat, every time
Adding chemicals without an accurate current reading is the most common mistake pool owners make, often leading to overcorrection and a new imbalance.
Consistency matters more than perfection
Regular testing and small consistent adjustments keep a pool in much better shape than occasional large corrections after things have already gone visibly wrong.
